Haydock Park,Saturday 2nd July 2016,Lancashire Oaks & Old Newton Cup Day

Typical British summer weather for one of Haydock Park’s big days of the flat season,a mix of sun albeit not for long mixed in with grey sky’s and the odd shower to cool down the many racegoers who might have had the odd sherbet or three.

Three middle distance races followed by four competitive sprints made up the day’s racing with the big two races being the famous Old Newton Cup and the Lancashire Oaks.

1.45 Bet365 Handicap,Class 3,1m2f,3yo (0-95)

Royal Ascot form came to the fore here in a reasonable opener,a few of these had questions to answer.

Wall Of Fire, not seen since coming 13th of 28 in the Brittania relished the extra two furlongs and pulled 2.25 lengths away in the last 75 yards from runner up Threat Assessed under James Doyle, this Hugo Palmer trained Colt looks likely to progress now and scored his first win since scoring on his 2yo debut last year,he should get further and can find more, Threat Assessed was game in defeat but may be better dropped back in trip,Champagne City who made most till being headed in the last furlong looks to be coming back to form

2.15 Bet365 Lancashire Oaks,Group 2,1m4f,Fillies and Mares 3yo+

Four non runners left us with six here with one being German trained and the other five from Newmarket, this was a good quality renewal.

Just 1.75 lengths covered the first five home here and the blue of Godolphin landed an across the card Group race double with Endless Time landing the prize quite cheekily in the end as she was eased up a little bit on the line from the staying on Furia Cruzada with Loving Thngs in third.

Endless Time continued her improvement from last season when she began picking up a Salisbury off 76 and won here off 107,the Yorkshire Oaks could be next up but her main objective could be the Filly and Mare race on Champions Day and maybe the Filly and Mare Turf at the Breeders Cup too, Furia Cruzada was a Group 1 winning mare in Argentina and stayed on well but maybe a drop back to 1m2f might help.

2.50 Bet365 Old Newton Cup (Hcap) Class 2,1m4f,4yo+

Top weight was 102 in what looked a traditional renewal of Haydock’s oldest and most famous flat handicap.
They went a good clip here with the field well strung out down the back in a look more akin to a staying jumps race and turning for home it had the look of two races as a group of six horses had a nice lead like something you would see in Le Tour.

Coming to 2f out Snoano looked the likely winner as he travelled smoothly under Rachel Richardson, approaching the last furlong the tank began to empty and the David O’Meara trained Tawdea began to get on top to score by a length and a half over Gold Prince and the staying on favourite Desert Encounter.

Tawdea was having only his second go at this trip and looked to get it quite well,he does hold an entry in next weekends John Smiths Cup and he could even be an Ebor type, Gold Prince ran a good race in defeat whilst Desert Encounter met trouble in running and doesn’t look finished with yet.

3.25 Cash Out At Bet365 Handicap,Class 2,6f,3yo+ (0-100)

Hoof It,the elder statesman of the party showed the young guns how to do it as he rolled back the years to score here, leading after the first furlong he just held on from New Bidder by a head, the pair were nicely ahead from Intense Style in third.

The 2011 Stewards’ Cup winner off 111 went in here off 91 and a possible target could be the Scottish Stewards’ Cup at Hamilton in two weeks time with the Great St Wilfrid another option, New Bidder has been in and out so far but should have his day soon, Intesne Style ran to his best form.

4.00 Bet365 Conditions Stakes,Class 2,6f,3yo+
Only five runners here but it was a tight looking race with the field rated 97-106

Glen Moss bounced out to make all here under Paul Mulrennan and gave another Royal Ascot race a boost with the first three home all having ran in the Wokingham coming 3rd,12th and 24th respectively.

Glen Moss is more of a 7f horse and recorded his first win over 6f here,he will be full of confidence now when he goes back into handicap company,Coulsty was 2.25 lengths back in second spot but has his best winning form on a firm surface.

Glen Moss

4.35 Bet365.Com Handicap,Class 4,6f,3yo+ (0-80)

A wide open looking race here with the twelve runners covered by just short of forty lengths front to back.

Dandyleekie gave the O’Meara/Tudhope team a double on the day as he appreciated the return to the softer conditions here, winning first time out at Ripon in April under heavy conditions he has posted credible efforts on good ground since but needs soft.

By Rights in second ran much better than when last spotted here two weeks ago but she has won two of her three races on a turning sprint race,Manatee Bay in third gave another solid run but looks weighted to his best, Foresight on handicap debut came fourth but looked one paced and could do better if upped in trip.

5.10 Casino At Bet365.Com Handicap,Class 4,5f,3yo (0-85)

Five runners went to post but the four inform types all got comprehensively walloped by the 11 raced maiden Just Glamorous under an enterprising ride by Shane Kelly who jumped out and made a real bee line for the stands side rail and got a golden highway to reward his consistent level of racing,he came 2.75 lengths ahead of Rantan who is better over 6f.

Just Glamarous deserved this win and should be able to kick on and hopefully build up some more win.

12th time lucky for Just Glamarous

Shady McCoy,Ran in the fourth race, was 5/9 and needed the run,has better form over 7f and will strip fitter for this

Foresight,Fourth in race six,ran well on handicap debut but needs a step up in trip.

Racing wise at the moment it could be the Rose Of Lancaster here next month, before then we hope to be out and about covering some local pre season football.
