Ladies Day at Haydock Park brought plenty of people out into the sunshine and while most of the sporting world is looking towards a certain event going on in South America, #rule40, for fans of horse racing the classiest race meeting of the day was here inbetween Manchester and Liverpool.
On a busy programme the afternoons feature race was the Group 3 Rose of Lancaster Stakes over 1m2f and this went to Royal Artillery who had a real battle against the Godolphin runner Scottish just getting past the long time leader in the last furlong, trained by John Gosden who saddled two in the race Royal Artilery is slowly coming along and should be even better at 4 next year.
Aljazzi returned from her break since finishing down the field in the 1000 Guineas to just get up to win the Dick Hern Fillies’ Stakes over 1m by a neck from Mix and Mingle and Pirouette in second and third, jockey Andrea Atzeni did very well on this filly having missed the break and she will get 1m2f in time
Opening race was a competitive mile handicap for the London Mile qualifying series and Treasury Notes from David O’Meara added to his two Ripon wins here as he stayed on well under Danny Tudhope,he could head to York for something at the Ebor meeting and looks to have plenty more to offer.
Jockey Emma Sayer gained a £20,000 bonus in the inaugural Ladies’ Trophy over 1m4f as she guided the Brian Ellison trained I Am Not Here to the winners enclosure,he did well to lead in the last 75 yards and looked far happier on the return to turf after a poor run at Kempton on Monday, this was his highest winning mark off 75, Emma Sayer won a race at Carlisle’s ladies meeting on Monday evening which qualified her for the bonus.
Odds on favourite Gershwin did the bookies a good turn when he got beat by the Sir Michael Stoute trained Abdon in the Class 2 1m2f handicap who was making his first since finishing down the field at Royal Ascot,a useful prospect who is slowly coming to hand he should prove to be more than a handicapper in time,Gershwin travelled well but couldn’t fully pick up,he might be an ideal Cambridgshire sort.
Two sprint handicaps concluded the day,in the 6f race Normandy Barriere gained his second win of the season after finishing runner up at Ascot in the ladies race on King George Day,he could pop up at Ripon maybe for the Great St Wilfrid as he won with a bit in hand here otherwise a trip to Ayr next month looks a logical step and in the concluding 5f handicap favourite backers went home happy but only just as Outrage pipped his nose on the line after his 9lb hike from winning at Yarmouth last month.
This Saturday the Wattyracing roadshow takes to the road as he head to Ripon for the Great St Wilfrid,a real dash for the cash.
Pirouette,3yo trained by Hughie Morrison,3rd in the Dick Hern she should pick up more black type soon
Explain,4yo typical Ruth Carr sort who pays his way,he’s 4lb above his last winning mark but has a race in him soon.
Until next week Goodbye
