Atherton Collieries v Cammell Laird,Hallmark Security League Premier Div,Saturday 10th September 2016

The sun was shining in Atherton on this late summer afternoon, probably not as hot in Rio at the moment for the current Paralympics although just shy of three miles down the road from the Kensite Stadium in Leigh Market, 2012 S8 Gold Medalist Heather Frederiksen was opening her new market stall Molly’s Candles & Gifts.

Onto the game and Colls had a real comeback here and had to dig deep as the top of the table side with dreams of reaching the Northern Division of the Evo Stik almost came unstuck against a side stuck st the bottom with no wins now in their first eight games of the season.

Oddly enough on this weekend last year,Colls found themselves going down by a goal to Bootle and for the home side a sense of deja vu of going down to a team from Merseyside looked like occurring again

Cammell Laird began with the upper hand and opened up the scoring as Danny Lomax struck an easy shot in the box that was only gong one way to make it 1-0 to the away team, Colls really struggled to get going as the goal looked to have knocked them for six and to make things worse they were down to ten men as Brad Cooke got shown the red card in what looked dubious circumstances, Colls did have a few decent chances and were probably glad to have made it to the half time oranges just a goal down.

Laird were a bit unlucky not to double their lead and certainly didn’t play like a side stuck in the relegation zone in the first half

The second half however brought a complete turnaround in fortune for the home side with a comeback that any manager would have been proud of.

Colls equalised pretty quickly on 49 minutes when Mark Battersby got his sixth goal of the campaign and his third in successive matches (watch out Jamie Vardy) when he chipped keeper Ben Morrow from 8 yards out, just four minutes later Battersby made it 2-1 from a Dave Sherlock cross.

From this the game was never in doubt,Ben Hardcastle added a third on 72 with a fine strike then Jordan Cover who had a fine game made it 4-1 with a fine solo goal coming in off the right and tearing the Laird defence like a hot knife through butter to get a goal that was well deserved on 87 minutes.

FT Atherton Colls 4 Cammell Laird 1

Colls recovered from the first half scare and they showed real metal to show why they are one of the favourites to get promotion this season, many of the other teams in this division will be out to get them but it will take a good one to actually do it.

Heaven knows what manager Michael Clegg said at half time but if Colls have a swear box then judging by the selection of words used from my position close to the home dugout in the first half then Colls would probably be able to afford Lionel Messi!
