Wigan v Bournemouth, F.A. Cup Third Round. Sat 5th 2013

Traditionally the first weekend in January is when smaller clubs dream of an upset plus a big payday of being at the ground of a club in the Premiership.

Today at the DW Stadium the visitors were Bournemouth from the south coast and they brought a huge crowd probably over three thousand who for some reason thought Wigan would be a good place to visit.

This had the makings of a banana skin match, Wigan struggling at the foot of the Premiership while the visitors are near the playoffs in League One and had not lost for a while so confidence was on a real high.

Wigan made nine changes from the New Years Day defeat at home from Manchester United so a mixture of reserve and fringe players took to the pitch on the quest to begin their road to Wembley.

The first half was nothing to get excited about, well not until the forty first min when Eunan O’Kane struck a lovely ball from outside the box after a miss pass from Frazer Fyvie to make it 1-0 to Bournemouth.

Second half came and Wigan brought on Angelo Henriquez on who is a loanee from Manchester United and made a good impact especially when hitting the bar early on as the home side were desperate to get back in the game, Maynor Figueroa was also unlucky when his shot from outside the box went on to hit the bar

Wigan finally got their equaliser on 70 minutes when Jordi Gomez took a penalty which Bournemouth keeper originally got a hand to it but not enough to prevent Gomez following up the rebound.

In the end in finished a draw but the away side should feel robbed, they might not have had much of the ball but unlike Wigan they took their chances to get the goal when it mattered, who ever wins the replay will have an away tie at Macclesfield in the fourth round who beat Cardiff 2-1 at Moss Road so that had the potential to be another banana skin match.
